About the Artist
Luke's ancestry originates from the Wulgurukaba people of the Townsville region. At the age of eight he moved with his family to Tweed Heads where he attended school and lived on Bundjalung territory until recently. He started painting in 2015 during a period of incarceration. He now paints professionally and has commissioned works for St Vincent's Hospital, NSW government, the Victorian Koorie Court and privately through The Torch program. He is still incarcerated in Victoria and paints to help support his family and to prepare him for a life outside the prison system. He encourages and mentors young Indigenous men in jail to use art as a means of staying connected to their culture, tell stories and escape the stress and anxiety associated with prison.
About the Artwork
Songlines are ways that information is passed between tribes and generations. They can be dance, music, stories or artwork. Songlines teach us love and law. They enable us to navigate the land, teach us creations stories and give important information relating to seasonal hunting and gathering, Custodians of the lands and the right time to burn the land. This series of paintings is my interpretation of Songlines.
