About the Artist
My name is Kylie Johnson and I am of Pitjantjatjara descent through my father.
Interior design, styling and floral design have been my practice for many years, originating from a long love of flower design and floristry. I love flowers and foliage for not only their aesthetic beauty, but also their medicinal effect on our well-being and how we live around them. This translates to a keen interest in plants, herbs, flowers and their various properties on a visual and spiritual level.
Painting has been new to my practice, but has come to me as a natural avenue and medium to express shape, colour and composition, in a way that leads me back to nature.
Photography has also been an important part of my practice that has interlinked with my painting. I love to photograph and capture the essence and true beauty of a plant, showing all the chaos in the layers. I never tire of the changing seasons and the life cycle of plants. Constantly inspired to catch that perfect moment in time.
About the Artwork
This work is a painting showing a close look of the many spaces in our garden. Based on a photograph I captured, the painting showcases the layers and hidden world in and under the plants. It is about stopping and observing the tiniest areas in the garden.
The Macedon Ranges has been our home for 20 years, where we live on the doorstep of Mount Macedon. Holding a special place in my heart, this piece is to showcase the beauty of our place.
