About the Artist My name is Fiona Burns and I am a proud Yorta Yorta and Wiradjuri woman living on Waddawurrung Country. I learnt weaving from Aunty Vicki Couzens almost 6 years ago and I am forever grateful for this opportunity. I always felt called to weaving and this craft was something I wanted to learn for as long as I can remember. For the past 6 years I have been weaving for myself, friends and family but last year I decided to start selling my work to raise money or the Women’s Group at BADAC, and was giving the opportunity to sell my work at Perridak Art Gallery in Ballarat. I have also been given the opportunity to teach this craft to others and pass on the traditions of my ancestors. About the Artwork I started this project in May 2023 and completed it in February 2024. I had to take a break whilst making this for sorry business. I wanted to create an eel net as I wanted to create a larger project than my previous baskets I had weaved. Adding the Aboriginal flag to the design puts a modern twist on the traditional eel net and signifies the pride I feel as an Aboriginal woman, pride for my culture, my family and my ancestors.
