synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 2023

Nomad Girl tells the story of modern First Nations people, who have never lived on the lands of their Country. I've had a nomadic childhood, being born on Ngunnawal land, and growing up on both Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung lands. My adult life has been built on Wurundjeri land, here I have placed roots and began building a family of my own. Here I feel the most connected to culture and Country. My community is made up of women from many lands who have each found themselves living across the Kulin Nations, together we tell stories of who we are and where we've come from. I am a proud Kamilaroi woman, but it is the Ngunnawa, Gumbaynggirr, Bundjalung and Wurundjeri people who have made me who I am.

Artist Bio:

I'm Teagan, a proud Kamilaroi woman, living, painting and working on Wurundjeri land. I've been an artist, crafter and maker of things my whole life. In 2020, after returning from living overseas, I was yearning to reconnect with myself and my community. I picked up a paintbrush again for the first time in a long time and I have been telling stories through my art ever since.

I'm forever inspired by the ideas of community. How people organise, share experiences and process emotions. From the smallest microorganisms to the largest societies, these themes remain consistent. I work with both acrylic paints on canvas and digital mediums. My pieces tell the stories of contemporary lands, families and experiences. I don’t use symbols and colours in the way my ancestors did, because the stories I tell are different. It's these modern stories I aim to capture, and preserve for thousands of years to come.
