Shield of Protection was done when my family was going through a rough time and I had heard stories of the fighting Gunditjmara from Portland which is where I'm from and thought the shield was something that would protect us through these hard times and keep us all strong and protected. It was created by me in my 1st attempt at using a different medium other than acrylic paint or black ink/lino printing. I used a program on my iPad called Procreate which I was lucky enough to get a few one on one classes from a friend.
My name is Karen Lovett, I am a proud Gunditjmara women from Portland Victoria and am part of the Stolen Generations. I grew up in white state government institutions on and off for the 1st 18 years of my life with my twin sister.
I denied my Aboriginality until the age of 36 years old. Then my mother in law who is non Indigenous took me to Kangan Institutes Indigenous Education Centre in Broadmeadows to learn about my Culture Art and history. There I thrived and did four years of study and then taught the Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts class for the next 8 to 9 years and also ended up delivering Cultural Awareness Training to DHS around Victoria for Organisations such as the Indigenous Education Centre, the Koorie Heritage Trust, Deakin University in Geelong and so on. Today I'm very proud of my culture but had to leave work five years ago due to now waiting for a double lung transplant, hopefully sometime in the future. I still practice my art at home and go and Educate whenever possible and teach my children how they should be proud of who they are and where they are from.
